A new, old Vermont small business favorite.

Last weekend, needing some time away from the graphic design desk. And being that its Culinary Photography Vermontgarden planting time. Went over to the Arcana Nursery in Jericho Vermont. Not my first time here. But first time with the forethought of taking some pictures and actually bringing a camera. Or in this case my Droid. Now the main purpose of this outing, other then to enjoy an incredible perfect day. Was to get some hot peppers and other gardening things. Wound up with 12 various hot (HOTHOT) pepper plants and

some Tomatillo’s and now a week later there’s 9 plants. Well one is missing, root and stem, the two others are half munched on. Bird, Bug or Beast…we will probably never know. But will probably have to head back to Arcana and see if we cant replace the missing/dead/devoured Thai Super Chilly and White Habenaro.

Probably have to take some more photographys of the amazing varied of edibles and other plant life the have over there. Vermont Outdoor Photography Now I’m pretty sure the folks at Arcana run an all organic farm. Perhaps they will correct me if Im wrong.Yet despite the current trend to slap the ‘organic’ tag on anything. As some kind of marketing ploy. I am pretty damn sure that if the people of Arcana state they are growing something organically. It is. Alternately ask if your not sure or require specific information concerning any of their plants. You will get a friendly and well informed answer.

This is is the 3rd year of growing their plants from starters in the garden. And the results have been spectacular and tasty, every year. Arcana is a small business run by some very friendly people. All very knowing in the craft and trade. And will answer just about any question you can throw at them with a smile. Find the time to walk around and talk to you about the various species of flowers,herbs,vegetables, medicals, annuals,perennials well you get the idea.Vermont Flower photography

Tried some of the peppers jelly on hand for sampling when I was there. Super yummy. Not sure if they make it them selves. But it sure is tasty. Not to hot.Not to weak.

They offer some informative workshops  on various subjects. From Container Gardening, a very hot subject post Irene with the local soil being in  a mess after the flooding. To a medicinal herb workshop focusing on local to Vermont plants and herbs. Covering identification and uses to folklore and how to raise these herbs in your own garden. Actually a workshop I think Vermontdesignandmarketing.com will be attending. Going to wrap this up and get back to some Graphic Design for a new client (more on them later) . And met their photographer and graphic designer at this meeting. Of course I agreed and a meeting time  set. Might seem like a conflict of interest, since we both are small Vermont Graphic Designers and Digital Photographers. But always looking to expand my client base and help out other VT Businesses I agreed.

Figuring we both enjoyed the food at Juniper’s we decided to meet there for breakfast in a  few days time. Fast forward, meeting day around 10am. Sitting down with the graphic designing digital photographer we ordered coffee and some food. And the long list of things   to be done to help with their SEO began. Vermont Photo Booths

In walks a couple, they sit and look at the menu. Up comes the waitress to take their order. Now the waitress, she is polite and friendly and sociable. They begin talking about menu choices and the what ever it is they talked about. Now Vermont is a small state and since this is a small town. New customers are greeting with curiosity, where are they from or what brings them to this neck of the woods.

Turns out the couple in question were from Toronto, Canada. Seems they were on a bit of a road trip holiday and had decided to visit Waterbury Vermont as they headed further down south. These lovely people then volunteered that they had found the restaurant when looking for a breakfast place in Waterbury, VT., by doing  a web search (ok, Google search) for a place to eat here.

Keep in mind, I and my new client are one table away. I see his eyes go wide. I see the waitress face start smile even more. She starts pointing at me, tells the customers ,” Oh that is great, we just started working to get the place found online!“.

She points to me, letting the travelling couple know that I am the reason they found Juniper’s. In turn one of the customers cranes his neck around , smiling at me . His wife (I assume) is facing me, she smiles and waves. Says something to the tune of ‘great job and thank you’.

Needless to say, new client very happy. What would  soon be a new  client (the graphic designing photographer) pretty much signed on the dotted line right there.

Yes, doing a search and seeing your Search Engine Results in a coveted position is always good. Getting traffic to a client’s website or business is also good. But being at a client’s and literally seeing your effort rewarded and then getting more work out of it..Is just about priceless. Graphic Web Design or Internet Marketing for barter?

As everyone knows these days, the global economy is in a mess. Consumers, retailers, suppliers and manufactures are all looking to save a buck. Or whatever their national currency is. And as I sit here enjoying a calm and thankfully cool Vermont evening I find myself working on two web design proposals. For a mix of cash and barter. Yes bartering for graphic design, search engine optimization and internet marketing.

Barter in a digital based economy? Trading web design, search engine optimization and graphic design services for digital trade beads. Certainly a bit of cash. But yes barter.

Seneca trade beads and axe heads of the 21st century? There is a rise in demand for what VermontDesignandMarketing.com does. Which indeed makes me smile. Seems that local and not local businesses certainly need the graphic and web designs. Trading work on their social networking and the Search Engine Ranks.Some Video production or digital photography. They just don’t have the funds to pay top dollar or probably even industry standard.

Since I love the work and like helping people when I can. And well I like their products. I put for the offer for barter and cash. Saves us both some money and helps to make us some money too. Both myself and the potential new clients.

It seems that despite the high-tech nature of it all. It comes back to trade and barter. Perhaps not sea shells and blankets. But none the less hard work and ability in exchange for goods and or services. And not everybody can do what I do. I certainly don’t do what some folks can either. Sure I’ve mastered a rather broad set of skills both on-line and off. But one can’t do everything all the time. There is no amount of education or renaissance that will change this.

Certainly bartering is an idea I am not new to. Having landed the Jimmzpizza.com gig originally as a free offer to support this places amazing pizza. Since they did not have any  sort of web presence. Then when the owner offered to pay. I suggested a trade to save him some money and gain myself some incredible pizza. Pizza and a bit of dosh for the design and internet marketing work. So it was a total win/win situation. Not to mention making some new great friends in the deal.

A Vermont search engine company update.

Good morning and a quick hello this Sunday.
Just ran some quick ranking reports to see how the search engine optimization for
my own company or specifically the SEO part of it is going. Happy to say there are increases across the board. Might be a bit local search-centric.

But also starting to get results for the state of Vermont. Client SEO is going pretty darn well considering some of the odds stacked against us. This morning’s minor victory is still a victory and happy about ranking number 1 for Vermont Search Engine Company.
